The Vice Rector for International Cooperation of the University of Mostar, Prof. Sanja Bijakšić, PhD, participated in the 10th anniversary of the Berlin Process and the 8th Annual Stakeholder Conference as part of the Berlin Process’ Pillar of Science, Education, Research, and Innovation for the Western Balkans. This significant conference was held in Berlin from September 30 to October 1, 2024, bringing together representatives from academic and scientific institutions in the region.

Under the slogan "MUT ZUR ZUKUNFT – COURAGE FOR FUTURE," the conference emphasized the crucial role of education, science, and research in building a more stable and innovative future for the Western Balkans. In the opening speeches, participants heard from the President of the German National Academy Leopoldina, Gerald Haug, as well as Germany’s Minister of Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, who highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, digitalization, and strengthening democratic processes.

The Berlin Process is an initiative that brings together 16 European countries with the aim of promoting the integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union, strengthening their connections with the rest of Europe, and fostering regional cooperation in Southeast Europe. This process focuses on resolving bilateral disputes, promoting the rule of law, enhancing regional connectivity, and encouraging economic development and educational reforms.

One of the important topics of the conference focused on the so-called "third mission" of education, which refers to the broader role of educational and scientific institutions in society, including cultural and social engagement, collaboration with the economy, and contributions to the community. In the context of the Balkans, it was emphasized that education, research, and innovation play a key role in stabilizing the region, fostering social dialogue, and building bridges between the Balkans and the European Union.

The conclusions of the conference will be presented in a Joint Statement to the leaders of the Western Balkans at the upcoming meeting to be held on October 14, 2024, in Berlin.

It is interesting to note that the German National Academy Leopoldina, the host of the conference, has a long tradition dating back to 1652 when it was founded as a classical scientific society. Today, Leopoldina has about 1,600 members from all branches of science and is recognized as a leading academic institution in Germany.

The conference, as well as the entire Berlin Process, represents an important step in strengthening cooperation between the Balkans and the European Union and in shaping a common European future.
